Defensive pistol training in East Tennessee
Scenario-based defensive shooting skills that go beyond basic marksmanship. Learn to draw, assess threats, and respond effectively under pressure — skills that matter when it counts most.

Beyond the range – real-world readiness
Shooting at stationary paper targets is useful — but it doesn't prepare you for a real threat. Defensive Pistol training at Blackthorn Defense Tactics goes further, teaching the skills, mindset, and decision-making required to protect yourself in an actual defensive encounter.
Courses are taught by a USCCA and NRA certified instructor who understands that self-defense is as much mental as it is physical. You'll develop a complete picture of defensive shooting: from drawing safely and efficiently, to assessing threats, to making critical decisions under stress.
This course is appropriate for intermediate to advanced shooters with a solid understanding of basic firearm safety. Contact us if you're unsure whether your current skill level is the right fit.

Skills that work under pressure

Drills designed to simulate real stress so your skills don't disappear when adrenaline hits. What you practice is what you'll perform.

Defensive shooting is 90% mental. We train both the physical skills and the decision-making framework that guides when and how to use them.
-
Legal awareness
Understanding the legal framework around self-defense is non-negotiable. You'll leave knowing exactly where the legal lines are in Tennessee.
Defensive pistol questions
Do I need prior training before this class?
Yes — a basic level of firearm safety and handling proficiency is expected before this course. If you're new to shooting, start with our Firearms Training for All Levels course first.
What type of holster do I need?
A quality, retention-appropriate holster that covers the trigger guard is required. Contact us with questions about holster selection — we're happy to advise.
Is this a good course for concealed carry permit holders?
Absolutely. Many CCW permit holders take this course to build the defensive skills their permit class didn't cover. Knowing the law is step one — being able to act effectively is the next step.
How much ammunition will I need?
Ammunition requirements vary by session format. We'll send you specifics after you register. Plan for a meaningful round count — this is a training-intensive course.
